Jakarta, December 5, 2023 - The National Innovation Research Agency (BRIN) organized the G.A. Siwabessy Memorial Lecture, featuring Dr.-Ing. Yuliang Sun and Dr. Jun Sun from Tsinghua University, who delivered scientific lectures on nuclear energy.
Held at the Sumitro Djojohadikusumo Auditorium, B.J. Habibie Building, BRIN, both speakers discussed their research contributions and the development of nuclear technology in China and globally on Tuesday (5/12) morning.
Dr.-Ing. Yuliang Sun, with an educational background in nuclear and mechanical engineering, currently serves as the Deputy Chief Engineer of the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology at Tsinghua University.
Yuliang Sun's career has been dedicated to education, research, and the development of nuclear technology. He has contributed to the research and development of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) technology in China. Yuliang Sun has also served as a member of the Technical Working Group of Gas-cooled Reactors at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), an expert group member of the Generation IV International Forum, and the Director of Nuclear Power Division at the IAEA.
Meanwhile, Dr. Jun Sun, with an educational background in thermo-physics and power engineering from the School of Aerospace at Tsinghua University, currently serves as the Division Head of Reactor Physics, Thermal Hydraulics, and System Simulation at the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology, Tsinghua University.
Jun Sun has contributed significantly to the research and development of HTGR technology in China. His main interests lie in education, research, and the development of thermal hydraulic reactor, nuclear reactor simulator, and advanced nuclear system design.
About G.A. Siwabessy Award
Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education Agency (LPDP) also supports BRIN's talent appreciation program. Through #UangKita (#OurMoney) developed through the Research Endowment Fund, LPDP allocates a budget of Rp3.675 billion for five winners of the Research and Innovation Talent Appreciation program, namely Sarwono Award, Habibie Prize, Indonesia Innovator Award, Nurtanio Award, and Siwabessy Award.
The G.A. Siwabessy Award is named after one of Indonesia's first radiologists. In 1954, Indonesia was concerned about nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific after World War II. President Soekarno appointed G.A. Siwabessy as the chairman of the state committee to investigate radioactivity to determine whether Indonesia was contaminated by radioactive debris from nuclear tests in the Pacific.
At that time, investigations were conducted in the eastern region of Indonesia, and no contamination from radioactive debris was found. G.A. Siwabessy was actively involved in nuclear development, revealing that nuclear utilization was not limited to weaponry or energy but extended to various fields such as health, agriculture, livestock, industry, and the environment.
In 1964, President Soekarno appointed G.A. Siwabessy as the Minister of the National Atomic Energy Agency and in 1966 as the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. As an appreciation for G.A. Siwabessy's contributions to nuclear development, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) organized the G.A. Siwabessy Memorial Lecture in 2023.
In addition to the G.A. Siwabessy Memorial Lecture, there is also the G.A Siwabessy Award, an accolade for figures who have achieved various milestones and innovations in Indonesia's nuclear field. However, up to the second year of the event, no recipient has met the award criteria.
In the future, it is expected that there will be successful Indonesian nuclear experts who can achieve the Siwabessy Award, supported by LPDP scholarship and research funding programs.
